You Took Time Off—So Why Do You Still Feel Drained?
Maybe You Don’t Need More Rest—You Need a Different Kind of Recovery
Last week, I encouraged you to step away, take a breath, and let go of the pressure to prove yourself. If you did—even a little—I hope it helped.
But if you came back and thought, “I’m still tired,” you’re not alone.
And there’s a reason for that.
I’ve learned (the hard way) that resting your body doesn’t always restore your energy.
Sometimes, we go through the motions of rest—
✔ Logging off
✔ Sleeping in
✔ Taking a day or two away
—but our minds never stop spinning.
You’re still worrying.
Still checking email “just in case.”
Still wondering what’s piling up while you’re gone.
That’s not rest. That’s distraction in disguise.
Here’s What Helped Me Recover for Real
A few years back, after pushing way too hard for way too long, I hit a wall.
The kind of wall where even a full weekend off didn’t make a dent.
And what I realized was this:
👉 I wasn’t just physically tired. I was leadership tired.
The kind of tired that comes from being responsible for everyone else.
From carrying emotional weight that doesn’t show up on any calendar.
From constantly making decisions, staying strong, showing up.
And the only thing that helped wasn’t more time off.
It was intentional recovery.
Here’s What That Looks Like
✔ Space for reflection. Not just unplugging—but taking time to ask, “What’s weighing on me, and why?”
✔ Permission to feel tired without fixing it. Sometimes you just need to admit, “This is hard.”
✔ Protecting energy, not just managing time. Who and what actually recharges you? Who drains you? That clarity matters.
✔ Doing something just for you—with zero outcome attached. Read. Walk. Create. Journal. Not because it’s productive, but because it’s restorative.
Try This Before the Week Gets Away from You
Sometime this week, set aside 30 quiet minutes—no phone, no tasks, no obligations.
Ask yourself:
👉 What kind of rest do I actually need right now?
👉 Where have I been giving too much without replenishing?
You don’t have to overhaul your life. But one small shift—done intentionally—can reset your leadership more than a weekend off ever could.
Lead Forward with the Energy That Lasts
If you’ve been trying to “push through” without asking what’s actually depleting you, I get it. I’ve done it too.
But real leadership isn’t about endurance. It’s about knowing how to restore yourself so you can lead others well.
In Lead Forward!, I talk about sustainable leadership not as a nice-to-have, but as a must-have. Because no one leads well from an empty tank.
You deserve more than a pause. You deserve real recovery.
Take what you need. And I’ll see you here next week.
