The Secret to Leadership That Actually Inspires Action
At some point in your career, you’ve probably sat in a meeting where a leader gave a long, detailed speech—only for it to have zero impact. Maybe the message was clear, maybe it was even well-structured, but something was missing.
Nobody felt it. Nobody walked away inspired.
As leaders, we assume that if we say something, people will hear it. But communication isn’t just about delivering information—it’s about creating connection. If your team isn’t engaging with your words, it’s not because they don’t care. It’s because you haven’t made them feel why it matters.
Early in my leadership career, I learned this lesson the hard way. I was explaining a new initiative to my team—logic, data, bullet points. Yet their energy was flat. Nobody was resisting me, but nobody was driven to act either. That’s when I realized: I wasn’t leading. I was just talking.
Why People Aren’t Engaged in Your Message
🚫 You’re delivering information, not emotion. Facts matter, but people act when they feel connected to a purpose.
🚫 Your message isn’t personal. If your words don’t relate to their challenges, goals, or experiences, it won’t land.
🚫 You’re overloading them with logic. The brain processes emotion faster than facts. If you don’t lead with something compelling, people tune out.
🚫 You’re missing storytelling. We remember stories 22 times more than statistics alone. A strong message needs both.
How to Communicate Like a True Leader
🔹 Start with the “Why”
– Instead of jumping into what needs to happen, explain why it matters on a deeper level. Connect it to your team’s purpose.
🔹 Make It Personal
– Show how the message affects them. Will it make their work more meaningful? Give them opportunities for growth? Solve a frustration they have?
🔹 Use Storytelling, Not Just Data
– Facts persuade, but stories move people. Instead of saying, “Customer satisfaction is down 15%,” tell a real customer’s story that illustrates why change is needed.
🔹 Create Emotional Impact
– Use words that make people feel something: urgency, opportunity, excitement, ownership. Change starts when people are moved to take action.
Try This Today: Flip Your Next Message
Next time you need to get buy-in from your team, restructure your message.
❌ Instead of: “We need to improve customer service because response times have increased.”
✅ Try: “Imagine you’re a customer who’s been waiting two days for help—frustrated, ready to switch companies. That’s what’s happening, and we have the power to change it.”
See how framing it differently changes the way people engage with your message.
Lead With Words That Move People
Leadership isn’t just about strategy—it’s about how you make people feel. If your team isn’t engaged, motivated, or energized by your message, the problem isn’t them—it’s how you’re communicating.
In Lead Forward!, I share the communication shifts that help leaders inspire action, drive commitment, and create real impact. If you’re ready to go from being heard to being felt, let’s make the shift together.
